Westminster area guide

Part of the West End and sitting on the northern bank of the River Thames, the City of Westminster is best known for being the centre of London’s ceremonial and political life. Thanks to this, it’s one of the most sought-after and prestigious places in London to live; after all, who would not want to share a postcode with the Queen!

Westminster is chock full of churches, parks and places of interest including museums, galleries and palaces. Big Ben and the captivating Houses of Parliament dominate Westminster’s skyline, with the bells ringing out across London.

Located in Zone 1, Westminster is served by the Jubilee, District and Circle tube lines. On both the District and Circle lines, Westminster station can be found between Embankment and St. James’s Park, whilst on the Jubilee line it’s located between Waterloo and Green Park.

Fact File

  • Big Ben’s massive iconic clock slowed down by five minutes in 1949 when the minute hand became the temporary home of a large flock of starlings.
  • Westminster Bridge is painted green to match the colour of the seats in the House of Commons.
  • World famous poet Geoffrey Chaucer was the first person to be buried at Poets’ Corner, part of Westminster Abbey.

Local Amenities

  • Westminster contains some of London’s most well-known areas, with fantastic entertainment and nightlife in Piccadilly and Soho, plus West End shopping around Regent Street, Oxford Street and Carnaby.
  • Not only is The Palace of Westminster one of London’s four World Heritage Sites, you can also discover some of London’s most iconic attractions and galleries here.
  • Take a break from a packed day by visiting St James’s Park, a substantial sized Royal Park just a short walk from Buckingham Palace. Kick back and check out the wildlife (you might even spot some pelicans!), before strolling up through Green Park and crossing the road into Hyde Park.

Education

Westminster Children’s Services is the administering authority for many primary and secondary schools in the area. Additionally, there’s a large clutch of Roman Catholic (RC), Church of England (C of E) and Christian non-denominational (ND) schools in Westminster.

Primary schools include All Souls’ CE Primary School, ARK Atwood Primary Academy, Barrow Hill Junior School, George Eliot Primary School and many more. For children of 11-18, there’s Paddington Academy, King Solomon Academy and Grey Coat Hospital (CE, girls) to name just a few.

There are also many excellent private schools, Abingdon House School, Westminster School and Wetherby Preparatory School being just three of them.

We are proud to offer one of the best, and most competitively priced, lettings and sales services in the property industry. Vesper’s unique features make us stand out from the crowd.

James offered great advice and was extremely helpful when I was selling my property. They provide a far more personal and superior service to other high street estate agents and they saved my over 5k. Extremely impressed!

Emma Olivia

Recently let through Vesper and the whole experience has been brilliant. Viewing and signing was incredibly smooth thanks to Robyn who really went the extra mile for us. Since letting they’ve always been very prompt to respond to any issues we’ve had in the flat (James in particular is amazing). Best letting experience we’ve had, would highly recommend.
