Found in the east of London right on the riverside, Wapping is a community-focussed, sought-after place to live and work – and deservedly so.

Located between Limehouse and Tower Bridge on the north side of the River Thames, Wapping has a notably historic, Dickensian feel to it, complete with cobbled streets, wharves and old warehouses. A booming part of London’s Docklands until World War II wreaked mass devastation on the area, the 1980s saw a restoration of the red-brick buildings and cobblestoned alleyways once more, bringing Wapping back to its former glory. Galleries sprung up in old abandoned spice and tea warehouses, with the avant-garde B2 Gallery being one of the most famous.   • In 1969, the London Dock was filled in; in some parts of Wapping you’re literally walking on water.

  • Look for Pelican Stairs, Wapping Old Stairs and Watermen’s Stairs; they are all ancient embarkation points for getting on and off ferries and boats hundreds of years ago.

Part of the local authority of Tower Hamlets, Wapping has nurseries including Matilda Day Nursery and Dreammaker Day Nursery, plus two primary schools called Shapla Primary School and Hermitage Primary School. At secondary level there’s Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School and Wapping High School.
