With its extremely close proximity to Canary Wharf and the centre of the capital, Stratford has enjoyed something of a rebirth in recent years. A popular destination for younger people working in financial services, the area also attracts a huge number of tourists and day trippers. Indeed, the 2012 Olympics really put Stratford on the map, as its legacy has meant the equivalent of a whole new town being added on to this traditionally working-class East End neighbourhood. Stratford is also popular with parents who are drawn to the location by the large choice of very good standard schools. 

The area’s regeneration began with the massive and very successful Westfield Stratford City shopping centre which opened in October 2011. Alongside the existing shops in the retail centre and surrounding areas, it has now become Europe’s biggest single shopping centre.

Connections to and from Stratford are excellent, with over ground trains linking Stratford station to Liverpool Street, plus the Central line tube will take you to Oxford Street and Liverpool Street. Additionally, there are train services to Gospel Oak via Highbury and Islington, or you can take the Jubilee line and Docklands Light Railway into Canary Wharf.

  • Penny Brookes Street in the heart of Stratford got its name thanks to a nineteenth century doctor who played a key role in making PE lessons compulsory for school-age children.
  • Stratford was primarily an agricultural community during the 18thCentury, known mostly for its potato growing.
  • Stratford was actually part of Essex until 1965.

There are over ten primary schools in Stratford together with two ‘Outstanding’ secondary schools. Stratford is also home to students attending the University of East London (UEL).

Main primary schools include Carpenters Primary School, Maryland Primary School and Colegrave Primary School. The two secondary schools are Chobham Academy and Bobby Moore Academy.
