Shoreditch area guide
Immediately north of London’s central hub sits trendy Shoreditch, a booming, highly popular location particularly with younger people and families. With an outstanding location and attractive pull of inner city life, Shoreditch holds a strong appeal to City workers and those involved in the creative industries in particular.
Although nowadays Shoreditch is very much as “hip London” as you can get, many years ago it actually did sit outside the City boundaries and strongly rebelled against its laws and social standards. Packed with old world pubs and home to a slightly shady underbelly, it was a place where poets, actors, spies and prostitutes lived and worked. Indeed, the UK’s very first playhouse was built in Shoreditch in 1576, with many of Shakespeare’s most famous plays first being shown here. It was a sought-after spot for dancing, drinking and merriment; perhaps you might say things haven’t really changed!
Shoreditch High Street offers a truly impressive array of restaurants and bars, still popular with the creative arts community today. Head into the Dickensian alleyways and backstreets however and you may be surprised at the sophisticated side of Shoreditch you find there. Designer boutique shops sell everything from exquisite antiques and luxury bath salts to hand made shoes and tailored clothing, whilst rooftop bars and elegant hotels sit alongside the increasingly upmarket art galleries.
Fact File
- Gainsborough Studios (now stylish canal-side flats) was where Alfred Hitchcock made his very first film.
- In a house in Hoxton Street, Guy Fawkes’s Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was discovered.
- The television series “Rev” is filmed at St Leonard’s Church, with the story being based on the actual vicar there in real life.
Local Amenities
- Smaller grocery shops like Sainsburys Local and Tesco Metro are the order of the day, rather than larger stores. However, there are a couple of Waitrose supermarkets nearby on Whitecross Street and Angel. There is also a grocery store on Shoreditch High Street which specialises in organic, local and fair trade produce, plus there’s a popular Asian supermarket on Hackney Road called Longdan.
- The Sunday Market on Brick Lane is now a fast-growing tourist attraction, but Hoxton Market still remains the authentic East End experience people love, selling fashion, food and household goods.
- For a spot of swimming, exercise or relaxation, Ironmonger Row baths has a swimming pool with spa, gym and Turkish bath facilities.
Education
There is a selection of schools in the area from nursery and primary up to secondary. Central Foundation Boys School in particular has a robust reputation for producing musicians, including Trevor Nelson, Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp and Ronnie Scott. The Dulwich Estate, which also works alongside the infamous Alleyn’s school in Dulwich, is a notable benefactor of the school. Independent schools include The Lyceum Preparatory School and Dallington School.
