Notting Hill area guide

Notting Hill in well-heeled West London is so much more than merely the setting for a famous 1990s film. Not only does it host the Europe’s biggest street festival the Notting Hill Carnival, it’s also full to the brim with fashionable shops, restaurants and bars. Plus of course it’s also home to one of London’s most famous markets – Portobello Road Market.

Drawing countless visitors and London residents alike to its eclectic backstreets, small independent shops and eateries and pretty gardens every week, Notting Hill is the ideal place to spend a day out. Whether you’re into eating out or you’re more of a shopper, people watcher or film buff, Notting Hill is very hard to beat.

Found just north of Kensington and part of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, the area is served by Notting Hill Gate underground station. On the Central line, it is between Queensway to the east and Holland Park to the west. Alternatively it can be accessed via the District and Circle lines, between Bayswater and High Street Kensington stations.

Fact File

  • The famous blue door from the “Notting Hill” film can be found at 280 Westbourne Park Road, attracting many tourists each year. The film’s writer Richard Curtis once lived there and it’s from there he drew inspiration for his work.
  • Notting Hill Gate originally served as one of the country’s largest thoroughfares. Due to this, over time it has been the location of many tolls, hence the name.
  • The name for Portobello Road is not actually anything to do with mushrooms. Instead it comes from the War of Jenkins’ Ear, when the town of Puerto Bello in Panama was captured from the Spanish by Admiral Edward Vernon.

Local Amenities

  • Notting Hill is perhaps best known for its yearly Notting Hill Carnival, the world’s second biggest carnival (after Rio’s Mardi Gras)
  • An abundance of neighbourhood restaurants and boutique cafes can be enjoyed here, together with the double Michelin-starred Ledbury (a well-loved for its innovative modern European cuisine)
  • Portobello Road offer the globe’s largest antiques market with more than 1,000 dealers selling all sorts of collectibles and antiques
